By "offline" I mean connecting personally, one-to-one, with "prospects" and customers either by telephone, handwritten letter, and/or in-person.

In the Introduction (previous web page- first link above under "Also Available"), we mentioned 3-4 stages of interactions with people as it relates to your business. Let's look at the learning resources applicable the marketing skills needed for each stage as they relate to offline, in person, one-to-one interactions.

The FINDING people stage.

The solution is a combination of giving value and networking in order to obtain referrals for your business. The best books on this activity are:

  • Endless Referrals, by Bob Burg. Very practical ideas for building relationships that are the foundation for business growth.
  • The Go-Giver, by Bob Burg and John David Mann. The Go-Giver is a story, a parable, about an ambitious hard-worker named Joe who seems unable to reach his goals. He turns to a legendary consultant and learns surprising lessons for success.
  • The 29% Solution by Ivan R. Misner -- and pretty much any other book by this founder of the world's largest business networking organization (BNI).

The SELLING people stage.

As you recall from our description of attraction marketing, these anti-people methods do not work: chasing, arguing, preaching, begging, manipulating, or pushing. Still, at some point, a product or service must be sold, or the "business" ceases to exist! So how does the selling get done?

As a side note: We have never thought of ourselves as "sales" people. We have always had a rather negative image regarding "selling." These views have greatly hampered our network marketing activities, and to a lesser extent our high tech business consulting. The following resources have helped clarify selling, particularly as it relates to network marketing:
