Overview of "Attraction Marketing"

There are many ways to build a home business - whether it is selling a book you have authored, giving piano lessons, providing consulting services, or running a network marketing business. But the best way is to attract people. At the same time, the worst thing you can do is to repel people!

Here's another way to look at it: Isn't it better to have people lining up who already want to have what you offer than to spend a lot of time chasing people and trying to convince them to want it?

Attraction Marketing Described

Attraction marketing includes these elements:

  1. The marketing gives value.
  2. The marketer is friendly, credible, and positive.
  3. The marketing results in attracting new potential customers/partners who ask for the marketer's product/service/help without being pushed or badgered.
Now let's take a quick look at each of these things. (Some of these topics are described in greater detail in the "Tips" Newsletter.)

#1 Giving Value.

Attraction marketing always involves "giving value." This can be as obvious as a grocery store that offers a really good sale on apples. The store offers value; people respond. A more subtle, yet powerful, example: The produce manager of the grocery store works hard at being visible in the store aisle, giving away samples of delicious fruit, chatting about recipes, providing nutrition resources, and otherwise developing relationships with shoppers. The manager gives value; people respond. So, - questions that marketers should ask are: What value is desired? How can I provide it? (See "idea list" in yellow area at right.)

A Person-to-Person Example: I am at a party and separately meet two people I have not seen in a long time. Adam says: "I'm in real estate now! Here's my card. Give me a call if you are ever in the market to buy a new house." Bernie says: "How did you get started in the training business? ...What do you see as coming trends in the training business?" Later, Adam mails me a brochure for his real estate business. Bernie mails me a newspaper clipping about a firm looking for a training consultant that fits the type of consulting in which I specialize. With the clipping is a handwritten note on Bernie's oversized real estate business card - "Glad we had time to connect yesterday. I saw this business posting and thought of you. Keep in touch!"

Adam was hard selling. Bernie was "networking." Adam was "chasing." Bernie was applying attraction marketing by offering value. When I need real estate assistance, I am more likely to turn to Bernie than to Adam.

Web Site Example #1: Photography If I am thinking of buying a camera, and I search for information about three or four camera models, I am more likely attracted by a site that provides easy to understand, detailed comparisons of the advantages and disadvantages of the four models. I am more likely to buy from that site than at the 100 other sites that do little more than list the product, a picture, and a price. (NOTE: Anyone can post a product and set up a shopping cart system. It takes a great deal of time to write useful information.)

Perhaps I am an amateur photographer who has learned to take better wedding pictures and has learned to use my flash attachment more effectively as a result of a web site like all-things-photography. The business owner of that site has already succeeded in giving me value: information. So I am more likely to bookmark the site, share the site, and purchase from the site. There is a reason why that site gets over 3,000 hits a day! It is called - giving value.

Web Site Example #2: Nutrition Supplements There are many companies selling nutritional products, all of which feature their products, their ingredients, some of the science (much of which is too general to matter or illegal to post), and the virtues of their company, and well-respected staff. Sure, they all get some hits. Sure, some people go looking on the internet for certain brands and companies. Large size "Amazon-style" supplement retailers will do well with such web sites.

But what about the home business person with a few nutritional products for sale? What kind of value might attract? A site that does not blatantly pitch specific products but provides both general and very specific information in any one of many "long-tail" niche areas is the answer. Example: mental health for seniors (rest, good food ie.,recipes!, games, exercises, reading, nutrition, puzzles, jokes, supplements....) Example: Market fresh foods (farmers' markets, recipes, photo's of shopping trips, science of a fresh tomato, federal laws regulating food supply, eating and wellness, supplements....) Such sites (blogs) done well / done right can attract a following and attract customers. When readers begin to trust the site, they will trust your recommendations.

#2 Being friendly, credible, and positive.

Let's just examine one of these - "Friendly." Compare these two lists to get the idea.

Attracted to These
"Friendly" Attributes
Repelled by These
"Unfriendly" Attributes
Listens to me.
Talks all the time.
Converses with me..
Talks at me.
Patient with me.
Impatient with me.
Treats me like an equal.
Treats me like a child.
Consults with me.
Dictates to me.
Talks me up to others behind my back.
Criticizes me behind my back.
Takes time to help with my work.
Has time only for her own work.
Accepts responsibility.
Blames others.
Is interested in my problems.
Pushes his agenda.
Respects my privacy and space.
Invades my privacy and space.

Can you see how "friendliness" attracts? In the light of such attributes, and our reaction to them, it should be pretty clear why the following actions so quickly backfire and are considered taboo in attraction marketing:

  • Spam.
  • Promoting your product, service, or opportunity in social media (Twitter, forums, etc) without being asked.
  • Promoting your product, service, or opportunity in social conversation with friends, family, and colleagues without their asking about it.
Why? All three of those examples show a lack of respect. The promoter does not listen to what the person wants. It is all about what the promoter wants and can get... presumably the person's money. It doesn't feel friendly! There is a sense of "being taken advantage of." It feels "pushy."

#3 Attracts others - people come to you.

If you provide these four things together: value, friendliness, credibility, and a positive attitude-- the result will be to draw people toward you. Call it "magnetic marketing" or "marketing with pull," the result of attraction marketing should be business coming to you without your first having to chase, push, or manipulate them to hear your message.

As Ann Sieg has written: "A prospect that comes to you is infinitely more qualified than anyone you could ever approach yourself."

Note to Network Marketers

Traditionally, network marketers were told: make a list of people who might be interested in your product or who might need added income. Then they would be told to tell each person of their list about their product/service and business opportunity. Or invite them to a meeting. Is that chasing or attracting? It is not attracting, but there is a way to approach people in an "attracting" way if you are willing to be patient and put the potential customer/distributor's needs first. Unfortunately, for a whole lot of reasons, upline sponsors encourage fast action which generally results in interactions which tend more to repel than to attract. Go to this page for learning resources on the attractive person-to-person way to do network marketing (consultative Natural Selling®.)

Along came the internet. Network marketing companies built websites. Many provided "replicated" web pages for their distributors to use. (Replicated web sites are the same for all distributors except for minor "customizations.") In addition, many distributors tried to create their own version of a company website. (Perhaps only to be told by their MLM company that they were not allowed to create a web site with their company's name and products on it.) But the question remains, "What attracts people to such web sites?" Typically, very little. And expensive designs and dramatic opening "Flash" animations don't help. Why? Focusing on company and product features, no matter how well done, does not attract like focusing on benefits, information, and news that people want and are searching for. (See explanation and example below.)

So if you are a network marketer, ask yourself-

  • Have my invitations deteriorated into chasing and badgering?
  • Do I appear desperate? Do I treat people with impatience? Am I pushing people away?
  • Is my web-based approach attracting interested individuals (leads)? Or is my site unnoticed?
  • Would you rather have "prospects" come to you rather than have to look for them?
